The Western Ocean (also known as the Endless Ocean by Skandians) is the vast ocean to west of the mainland of Flanagan's world, and was rumored to hold a great western continent that was yet undiscovered, but without evidence, as all seafarers rumored to have sailed to it have never came back to tell the tale. This was the case until captain Hal Mikkelson of The Heron, along with his crew landed on this continent. The ocean is not mapped, but many have tried. The only known islands are the southwest islands (citation needed). The ocean borders Hibernia, Araluen, Gallica, Arrida and Iberion.

The Herons[]

During a special mission from Oberjarl Erak to Hibernia, the Heron crew were blown off course by a heavy storm, and the storm didn’t cease until weeks later, when The Heron was blown far into the Western Ocean. Thinking that there would be land, Hal continued on further into sea, as with the water almost completely drained because of a hole in one of the casks, they could not afford to turn back as they would only die without water on the journey back to any known countries. The hope that there would be land was further reassured, when Thorn theorised that because the world was on the back of a giant turtle, there had to be another continent as big as the mainland they knew, otherwise the earth would be unbalanced and fall off the turtle's back.

The Western Continent[]

The land to the west was eventually reached by the crew and their thirsts quenched. Going on to continue the journey. (See The Ghostfaces) This land bore many similarities to the mainland and was covered in forests.

Flora and Fauna[]

The animals encountered by Lydia when hunting were mostly animals native to the mainland as well as the new continent, with the exception of a turkey, jokingly called ”The Oggle Bird” by the herons, because of its “oggle oggle oggle” call, when it was first encountered. Other animals include deer, rabbits, and bear (albeit a slightly different type of bear).

Inhabitants[]

The land is inhabited by the Mawagansett people, aswell as the Ghostfaces tribe to the [south} (citation needed) and also the tribes similar to the Mawagansett people further up the main river. It is highly likely more peoples inhabit the continent further inland and further southwest, but no evidence is presented in the book to support this.

Trivia[]

The Western Ocean appears analogous to the Atlantic, while the continent appears analogous to North America.
