Teutlandt

A map of Teutlandt.

Teutlandt is a country on the western part of the Continent. It borders Skandia and Limmat in the north, Alpina in the east and Gallica in the west. It also borders the Stormwhite Sea. The Teutlandic flag bears the insignia of a black bear.

Etymology[]

The Teutons were a Germanic tribe during the Roman era. For a short while, they were the most prominent of all the Germanic peoples. During this time, the word Teuton became a synonym for German to the Romans. Therefore, Teutlandt is probably based on medieval Germany

However, there is another theory. In the 19th century, German nationalists began to see the Teutons as the first Germans. They started to call Germany Teutonia. This may explain that Teutlandt is not based on Germany, but on Prussia, which was the mightiest German state in that time (and the region which was conquered by the Teutonic Order, an order of monastic crusaders). This theory makes more sense than the first one, because it explains why Gallica owns so much of the lands which would've been Teutlandt if it were really based on Germany.

History[]

Teutlandt descended from the ancient Teuton tribes. The Teutons bravely and staunchly held back the Rovo Empire in 11 BCE, but are best well known for finally vanquishing the Rovo Empire and sacking Rovo in 189 CE. However, after the invasion the 10 Year Empire of the Teutonic Empire stretching from the north shores of Teutlandt to Iberion, didn't last long due to the fact that the people enjoyed their old Rovo masters and that Teutlandt was far too weak and divided to effectively replace the Empire. So soon in 199 CE, a civil war broke out dividing the factions to as they are now, formed/reforming Gallica, Polski, Toscano, Alpina, Aslava, Araluen, Celtica and Iberion. Teutlandt always wished to rise again but never could, remaining a weak divided faction.

Around 625 Common Era, Teutlandt was invaded by the Temujai as they steadily made their way south, cutting through the northeast corner of Teutlandt as they marched further towards the Gallican shore. As Teutlandt was divided between (independent) warlords and Barons who were warring amongst each other, not much rebellion was given, the Teutlandters to divided to offer a cohesive resistance to the Riders march, and in mere weeks the whole country was occupied. However, the Temujai retreated after a few months, for a succession crisis had broken out in the Eastern Steppes (their homeland) after the Sha'Shan, Mat'lik, had died, leaving in his relatives - the three major army officials - to rush back to the Eastern Steppes in an attempt to seize the vacant position. Teutlandt never really recovered from this invasion and, indeed, grew to an even worse state, for in the wake of the retreating horsemen, dozens more nobles seized their own semi-monarchy for their separate clans and families, leaving the land still divided, broken and ripe for conquest around 645 CE, when the Temujai again invaded, this time with the aim of seizing Skandia (and the northern mountain passes of Teutlandt and Alpina) before they were met and driven back by the Skandians at Hallasholm. However, it retains its richness in natural resources, leading to Temujai ambitions to continue to be focused on it, among other wealthy countries like Gallica and Araluen. Knights of Teutlandtic heritage but with no attached loyalties or governance roam Teutlandt and countries that border it, and, though they are little more than freelance fighters, most of these knights are known for their haughty nature and feeling of superiority. Despite this, however, the King of Teutlandt still maintains a court in their own central holdings and occasionally send emissaries abroad. Foreigners seeking employment can also find work in the service of one of its many nobles, as evident by Denison's service as the head of Baron Heinrich von Grall's foresters after he was forced out of Araluen by Morgarath.

Unlike in Araluen, where advancement depended on the man or woman's actions, in Teutlandt, it depends on how much gold they offer the monarch. The selling of Fiefs to the highest bidder is a common practice in the territory of Teutlandt, further fracturing the country with its provinces at risk of falling under potentially disloyal, power-hungry or corruptible individuals. Fiefdoms are furthermore seemingly typically passed down through the clans that control them, though, if the claim is distant, it may be possibly denied if solid evidence does not come to light.

Because of its close proximity to Skandia, Teutlandt was once a popular raiding ground for Skandian Sea Wolf raiders, who often attacked out of the blue, "liberating" the valuables of villages who's inhabitants fled or lost after battling the Skandians and occasionally taking slaves, for the Hallasholm Slave Community has a notable body of Teutons among them, such as (possibly) Ulrich. Though the majority of Teutlandt's farmers are locals, the presence of foreigners who have bought a small piece of land in the Kingdom to settle in is not entirely outlandish comprehension.

Some Teutlanders are also known to be slavers, however, and Teutlandtic ships occasionally launching sudden strike attacks on Araluen with the intention of taking slaves to be sold at the Socorro slave market.

The coast of Teutlandt is divided into dozens of squabbling city-states, some whose borders extend a mile or so from the state's nominal capital, others whose borders reached barely any further than the capital's walls themselves, which mappers, weary of the constant change, eventually marked as part of Teutlandt, albeit an unclaimed part, as the rulers of Teutlandt were to caught up in their own internal disputes and struggles for power to claim. These independent states are constantly competing to secure for of the coast, attempting tp annex their neighbours territories from them. Teutlandt's shoreline was a occasional raiding ground for Skandian raiders like Erak Starfollower and Svengal, who often raided the countryside. After the Treaty of Hallasholm, Teutlandt was one of the nations that complained that the Araluens were helping the Skandians raid their shores by providing their wolfships with favourable trading terms to provisions. Since the Skandians enter into a more lawful trade, such attacks were lessened

Its disorganised status also resulted in Lord Anthony maintaining a network of informants within Teutlandt, as well as Gallica and Iberion, to inform him of any threats from the three countries were to rise to dangerous power.

Despite this, as the language spoken by the people of Teutlandt, along with those of the Galls and Temujai, are the primary language merged to form the common language, it can be assumed Teutlandt maintains some contact with many countries of the outside world, like Araluen, for King Duncan was once plagued with judgements and petitions from a Teutlandtic trade delegation clamouring for his attention

Geography[]

Teutlandt's western border stretches along the south-west and up the southern north-east of the Stormwhite Sea coast. Its northern and eastern borders are made up by the Alpinan Mountain Range. Teutlandt also borders Alpina in the east, Gallica in the south-west, Magyara in the direct south and Skandia in the north as the Stormwhite begins to turn back towards the entrance to the Narrow Sea.

The Alpinan Mountains have secured the Teuton lords along their base from all attacks (except for the relentless Temujai invasions), but the shores leave Teutlandt open to attack, for the small-standing army that is all the Teuton monarch can mobilise cannot occupy the entire coastline. The Teutlandt shoreline is dotted with sand dunes and coves, scattered many natural harbours and fishing hamlets. In the south, grasslands and small hills accompany light forests, while in the north, high hills rug the dense forests.

Governance[]

As mentioned earlier, Teutlandt has never known a stable, unified rule, and has always been divided. Brutal warlords rule their small realms as despots, and often fight each other for land and money and many warlords are parts of one or another alliance. Indeed, Oberjarl Ragnak contemplated that had Skandia's ambitions lain in the direction of conquering new territories, he could have easily subjugated the faction-riddled, squabbling nation to the immediate south of his own country with the Skandians' small military force.

Despite this, however, the Teutlandic king retains a court of nobles to apparently enforce his will and act as representatives in different countries.

Military[]

Most castles don't have standing armies, but rely on levies. They are well-garrisoned, as is the case in most (large) cities.

However, these armies are too small to stop large forces, such as the Temujai's.

Economy[]

The Teuton economy is mostly dependent on farming and plundering, as the Teuton share in international trade is very small. Most warlords trade with each other, but this trade doesn't often leave the borders.

However, Teuton have sent trade delegations to Araluen (and possibly also other countries), and Teutlandt is part of the Silisian Council, from which it possibly gets economical aid.

Locations[]

  • Bolshafen: A large coast trading settlement with notable port. After Wolfwind was taken by El Despiadado's corsairs, Bolshafen was attacked and was left with it's people furious at the Skandians.
