Plot Overview[]

While hunting, Cassandra was captured by a Temujai warrior. When she failed to return, Will followed the Temujai's tracks back to his camp.

When Halt and Horace attempted to cross the Skandian border, they found a dozen Skandians dead. Halt recognized the work of the Temujai and followed their tracks back to their camp, reuniting with Will and Cassandra after defeating the Temujai.

The group was then captured by a group of Skandians led by Erak, with whom they entered a tentative alliance. After Halt and Erak investigated the main temujai army, the group headed to Hallasholm to warn Ragnak.

Acting as the Skandians' tactician, Halt sent groups of ships of Skandians to raid the Temujai's army with hit-and-run tactics. Meanwhile, Will and Horace began training slaves in archery. Cassandra followed Slagor onto his ship, overhearing a plan to betray Skandia by bringing Temujai cavalry to attack the back of Skandian army. However, Slagor discovered her identity as the daughter of King Duncan, against whom Ragnak had made a Vallasvow. Halt suggested Ragnak simply postpone the vow until the Temujai had been defeated, as it had no time limit. Once Ragnak agreed, Halt then revealed Slagor's betrayal.

They sent three ships to Sand Creek Bay, finding the Temujai waiting, who then asked where Slagor was. Despite the their suspicion, however, the Skandians managed to trick the Temujai into getting off at an island and then left them there.

Soon after, the Temujai army arrived. Due to Halt's expertise, they were able to counter the Temujai's usual tactics while the Skandian archers dealt heavy damage. Once their location was revealed, the Temujai began targeting the archers. Although successful, the Temujai army sustained heavy losses. Realizing it was too costly to continue, General Haz'kam finally decided to retreat.

After the battle, Ragnak was cremated honorably; he died as a berserker in the final moments of the battle. Erak was elected to be the new Oberjarl, and he and Halt drafted a treaty between their countries, with Cassandra signing on her father's behalf.

Erak took the Araluens home; on Erak's suggestion, King Duncan ended Halt's banishment early as a gesture of goodwill.

Halt was accepted back into the Ranger Corps, Horace was knighted and became part of the Royal Guards, and Will was offered to become one of the Royal Scouts. Will turned the offer down, and he and Halt rode back to Castle Redmont as Horace and Cassandra watched from the battlements.
